Bennett papers, 1851-1894.

Diaries, correspondence, printed military orders, and photocopies of other military documents. His diary of the Utah Expedition, 1857-1859, and two diaries from military service in Arizona, 1862-1863, record conditions at posts including Camp McDowell, conditions of animals, weather, length of journey, etc. The 1862 diary covers a journey across Arizona to California; the 1865 diary describes activity of the California Volunteers and Arizona Volunteers in Arizona. Correspondence is present from Bennett's wife, 1865-1866. The printed "Dept. of New Mexico, Synopsis of Indian Scouts and their results for the year 1864, General Orders No. 4" consists of a chronological listing of troop combat with Indians including actions of Col. King S. Woolsey and Col. Christopher Carson. Statistics are present for the Bosque Redondo Reservation and for the numbers killed and wounded in military/Indian encounters sorted by military, civilian and Indian. The other is "General Orders No.2, Jan. 5, 1866", Court martial of Lt. William J. Perkins at Maricopa Wells 7 Nov. 1865. There is also an 1863 testimonial note for Capt. Colorado, chief of the Cocopas. Photocopies of other military documents are also present.

Army officer, participated in the Utah expedition, 1857-1859, served in the 1st California Volunteers, 1863. Bennett briefly commanded Fort Yuma, then was stationed at Fort Craig, N.M. and Fort Bowie, Ariz. In 1865, he established Fort McDowell. From the description of Bennett papers, 1851-1894.
